Computational issues modeling the magnetosphere

J. Raeder of SSC/UNH will discuss the computational limitations in modeling the earth's magnetosphere. The magnetosphere surrounds Earth and shields it from the solar wind and energetic particle radiation originating from the sun and the cosmos. Understanding and predicting Earth's geospace environment, now called `Space Weather', has become increasingly important over the past decades because of the possibly harmful effects on assets like communications satellites, and the risks it poses to human activity in space.

I will outline the approaches used to construct computer models of this environment, in particular, how the equations are cast into a form that allows for a computational solution, and the challenges that we are facing.
